Ikea Mexico hiring ex-Best Buy employees for its 2021 opening

Mexico City, Mexico — Ikea has opened its doors to Best Buy employees in Mexico City after the company shut. Thousands were left without jobs after Best Buy Mexico announced its closure last year, however, Ikea has stepped in.

The Swedish giant, who is about to open its first physical store in the country, is hiring the former Best Buy employees. The Best Buy chain thanked Ikea for giving its employees an opportunity in their company after the closure of its operations in Mexico.

Through his Twitter account, the technology store wrote “ We are sure that you will find collaborators who will build a great team with you, thank you very much for your support, @mx_ikea!”

Ikea says it is important for them to work with the community for a better day-to-day life for the people, “our collaborators being our strongest pillar.”

In November 2020, Best Buy reported that it would cease operating in the country, with the closure of its branches on December 31. Its website, meanwhile, would remain operating until stocks were exhausted.

“We made the difficult decision to exit our operations in Mexico. I want to thank the teams in Mexico for their tremendous work over the last few years. Everyone should be incredibly proud of their achievements,” said the company’s global CEO, Corie Sue Barry at the time.

The new Ikea store, which will be the first in Mexico, was set to open in the Fall of 2020, however, the pandemic had an effect on those plans. Ikea, who is still in the process of hiring employees, will open their 23,000 square meter location this year.

In October, Ikea opened its online shopping option in Mexico, with deliveries only in Mexico City and its metropolitan area.

The physical location, which is three levels, is located within the Encuentro Oceanía Shopping Center, east of Mexico City and will have between 300 and 350 employees.

Ikea says they will open the Mexico City location in the first quarter of 2021. The company says they also plan to open stores in Guadalajara, Querétaro, Monterrey and Puebla.
