Tulum, Q.R. — Witnesses say four armed men opened fire against two Tulum restaurants Wednesday night before fleeing in two vehicles. One woman was killed and several others were injured in the attack.
Gunfire erupted against those dining at La Malquerida and La Querida side-by-side restaurants in the city’s center around 10:16 p.m. Preliminary reports say two men and two women were hit by the bullets that sprayed the restaurants. One of the women died on scene.
The others were rushed to hospital with undisclosed injuries. There is no word on their condition.
The shooting happened at the eateries, which are located on the city’s popular Centauro Sur Street in the area known as La Mini Quinta. Emergency 911 sent first responders to the scene after the report of gunfire.
Ministerial Police are said to have collected 31 9-millimeter caliber casings from the scene. The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed the attack, saying an investigation is under way and added that additional information about the victims cannot be provided.
That statement was made after local media reports claimed the deceased woman was a tourist. That information has not been confirmed by authorities. There is also no confirmation on which of the two restaurants hit by the gunfire was the target.
