Guards under investigation: Third prisoner to escape Cancun penitentiary recaptured

Cancun, Q.R. — The third prisoner to escape from the Cancun penitentiary Wednesday night has been recaptured. The escapee has been identified by police as Oscar Adhemir Cazas Amador and/or Irving Alejandro Trejo Macías.

According to a statement from the SSC (Secretary of Citizen Security), he was recaptured around 7:00 a.m. local time in a jungle area near El Pedregal. He has since been admitted into municipal facilities and is facing charges of evading justice.

“The general public is hereby informed that, as a result of an operation carried out by authorities from all levels of government, Oscar Adhemir Cazas Amador and/or Irving Alejandro Trejo Macías was recaptured.

“He escaped from the Benito Juárez Municipal Penitentiary on the night of Wednesday, March 12th of this year. This individual was located near a jungle area near the El Pedregal neighborhood and will be brought before the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Quintana Roo for the crime of evading justice.”

“The individual identified as Oscar Adhemir and/or Irving Alejandro “N” escaped from the Benito Juárez Penitentiary. The man was arrested in 2024 for violating the Federal Firearms Law and crimes against public health, for which he is already being prosecuted,” the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) said Thursday.

He was the last to be recaptured of three inmates that made the successful escape from the Cancun prison Wednesday night. State officials have said they are investigating the escape, including the actions of the prison guards, to find those responsible.

On Thursday afternoon, the State Attorney General (FGE) also released a brief public statement on the recapture of all three inmates.

“The Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office (FGE) announces that following the escape and recapture of three inmates yesterday at the Benito Juárez prison, this Social Representative has initiated an investigation to investigate the actions of prison authorities and determine responsibility.

“The Attorney General’s Office reaffirms its commitment to zero tolerance and impunity and to bringing lawbreakers to justice.”
