Cancun, Q.R. — Two of three inmates who escaped from Cancun prison Wednesday night have been recaptured. Authorities reported the locating and recapturing of two men after an intense search operation.

Dozens of police officials scoured region 520 of Cancun after three inmates held at the Social Reintegration Center (Cereso) escaped. Federal authorities issued a Red Code after prison officials triggered the escape alert.
Dozens of police were seen searching a 30 block area of streets, buildings, public spaces and rooftops for the prison escapees. Drones and tracking devices were also used to locate the inmates.
The State Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC), Julio César Gómez Torres, confirmed the capture of two. One was captured on Nichupté Avenue, while the other was located in region 521.

The inmate who remains at large has been identified as a 24-year-old male who had been arrested for carrying a firearm and was under judicial process when he escaped.
In a statement, the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) reported “an escape incident at the Benito Juárez Penitentiary Center. Three inmates managed to escape, but thanks to the swift intervention of authorities from all levels of government, two of them have already been recaptured.
“In an immediate response, the SSC activated the red code and, together with security forces from all levels of government, are working in coordination. They implemented an extensive search and location operation in the area, detaining two of the fugitives.

The operation continues in the area with the goal of locating and arresting the third fugitive. We ask the public to facilitate access for emergency units.”
