Frustrated Mahahual residents protest electrical instability with roadblock

Mahahual, Q.R. — A group of frustrated residents of Mahahual generated a road block in protest of ongoing electrical failures. Area residents agreed to give the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) the requested four days to correct the problem.

However, they took to the public junction with a blockade after no response from the CFE. Using large rocks, tree branches and a private vehicle, they lined the road with their homemade banners saying they would only open the road once power was stabilized.

The group also warned of another similar protest in the neighboring town of Xcalak where residents are also experiencing electrical issues. The electrical failures affect not only power supply, but also water since the system is dependent on electricity to pump water into homes.
