Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Solidaridad mayor Lili Campos says Fonatur will restore the affected Playa del Carmen Boulevard. The main artery of the city was heavily damaged and devoid of thousands of trees for construction of the Maya Train.
The removal of more than 20,000 trees along the boulevard began in May of 2021. Trees were removed from the federal highway between Cancun to Tulum where the train tracks were expected to be laid.
However, late last year, concerns were made public about Section 5 south that would see it run directly through the center of Playa del Carmen. Since then, officials have determined a change in route was necessary. But not until months of work was done in the construction of the base of the Maya Train overpass.
With the announcement of a new route that will see the train pass on the outskirts of Playa del Carmen, mayor Lili Campos says with a project similar to that of Kukulcán Avenue in Cancun, the federal government will rehabilitate the section of Playa del Carmen Boulevard that was damaged by the Maya Train project.
Campos confirmed a meeting was already held with the director of Fonatur, Javier May, in which it was agreed that the federal government will be responsible for restoring the boulevard, providing a beauty and attractiveness that will equate it to Kukulcán Boulevard in Cancun.
Campos also said that the new route will cover 58 kilometers of Playa del Carmen territory in the municipality of Solidaridad, where it will pass through the vicinity of Villas del Sol.
The new route will then “move away towards the western area and travel on the peripheral from Playa del Carmen,” said Teresita Flota Alcocer, head of Infrastructure and Sustainable Urban Development.
“Given that it is a priority project at the national level, the work has been pre-authorized, not only in environmental matters, but also the subsoil and until now, is exempt from the environmental manifestation.
“However, the municipal authority will be vigilant that the corresponding environmental and geotechnical impact studies are carried out to avoid damage to ecosystems,” she added. Neither of the officials stated when that repair work for Playa del Carmen Boulevard will begin.
