Cancun, Q.R. — It will be March when the heavy lifting for the construction of section five of the Maya Train begins. On Thursday, Rogelio Jiménez Pons, director of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), confirmed March will be the start of the major construction.
He explained that work is constantly being done, which now, consists of geophysical studies so they can determine the best placement for the columns that will be required to support the overpass section of the train.
Jiménez Pons said that section five north, the section that will run from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, will be elevated and require the columns. For that section, the armed forces will be in charge of its construction.
He clarified that when that work begins, there will be four functioning lanes for traffic, two in each direction, so as to not cripple mobility in the area.
“Due to the size of the work and its complexity, there will be effects, but we are going to minimize them,” he stressed.
Section five of the Maya Train consists of two parts. Section five north, which runs from the Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen with a train station in Puerto Morelos, and section five south, which runs from Playa del Carmen to Tulum.
Along section five south, there will be train stations in Xcaret, Puerto Aventuras and Akumal as well as a station in the town of Tulum and another at the upcoming Tulum Airport.
