Chetumal, Q.R. — Five people were rescued Sunday from Chetumal Bay by the Marina of Mexico. The Secretary of the Navy made the rescue after being told of an overturned boat.
Authorities were notified of the incident by someone who requested their support after seeing an upside down boat with five people clinging to it. Navy personnel located the overturned El Abuelo vessel in the Bay of Chetumal. Four adults and one minor were pulled from the water and returned to shore.
In their statement the Navy reported, “This support was provided at the request of a person who went to the facilities of the Naval Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Station (ENSAR) in Chetumal indicating that a vessel named El Abuelo, without registration, was stalled (upside down) with five people on board, including a minor.”
The group of five were sport fishing Sunday at the time of the incident. Authorities did not say how the boat came to be overturned.
