Chetumal, Q.R. — An evening restaurant fire in Chetumal caused diners to be evacuated as police and firemen arrived. The rooftop fire happened at an eatery in the parking area of the Chetumal Plaza Las Americas Sunday evening.
The fast food restaurant was evacuated while fire control efforts began. Responding firefighters were at the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m. in response to reports of smoke coming from the roof.
By the time they arrived that smoke had grown into flames that were seen shooting from the restaurant’s roof. Dozens of customers and workers were evacuated from the inside while firemen worked to control the situation.
Early reports say the fire was the result of an electrical short that caused flames to ignite near the restaurant’s rooftop LP gas tanks. Firemen successfully extinguished the fire and cooled the tanks without incident.
According to Guillermo Núñez, the General Director of State Civil Protection, subsequent reports will determine the exact cause of the accident. There were no injuries reported.
