Puerto Aventuras, Q.R. — The Secretariat of Ecology and Environment of Quintana Roo says they will inspect a Puerto Aventuras marina for possible contamination. The Ministry made the statement Wednesday after a local resident posted a video of what appears to be residue from be a fuel leak floating on the water.

In their statement, the department reported that they will inspect the area to determine the origin of the oily substance seen in the video. The video shows a large area of the South Marina of Puerto Aventuras that appears to be contaminated. Concerns have been raised about the possible spread of that contaminant to other water areas.
The Secretaría de Ecología y Medio Ambiente de Quintana Roo said through the Environmental Attorney General’s Office, they will inspect establishments in the area including hotels and restaurants as well as surrounding facilities, to verify compliance with current environmental regulations, especially regarding waste management plans.

The state agency warned that if noncompliance is detected, the relevant federal authorities will be notified and appropriate sanctions will be imposed in accordance with state and federal environmental legislation.
