Mahahual, Q.R. — Reports say at least two dozen palapas were destroyed in an early morning fire. The fire happened early Thursday morning along a waterfront area in the town of Mahahual.
Rows of the grass-topped structures were reduced to ash during a massive blaze shortly after midnight along the Mahahual waterfront. The palapas were used by seaside businesses.
There are reports that local residents attempted to put out the fast moving fire with buckets of water and fire extinguishers, however, strong wind gusts were no match, helping to fan flames.

Local authorities arrived with a fire truck and were finally able to combat the fire.
They were able to fully extinguish fast moving flames, but not before it consumed a large area of waterfront infrastructure. Some local media have reported as many as 40 palapas burned.
According to initial reports, the fire was started by someone using fireworks.
One person believed related to the use of those fireworks was taken into custody. It is not known if the person arrested is an adult or a minor.

There were no injuries reported, however, damage has been noted as substantial.
