Director of private Chetumal school charged for concealing report of sexual abuse

Chetumal, Q.R. — A woman accused of covering up allegations of sexual abuse at a Chetumal school has been arrested. The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office reports that after an investigation, Maria H was arrested and officially charged with “concealment to the detriment of an adolescent victim.”

They agency said the incident happened in June of 2020. Police began an investigation in September of 2020 “for the crime of rape and sexual abuse in a private school located in the Centro de Chetumal neighborhood.”

Maria H, who was director of the school, is believed to have become aware of the incident, but failed to report it to authorities. Reports say at least one minor was the alleged victim of sexual abuse by a coach from that school. The victim reported the incident on June 15, but without the directors taking any action, reporting it to authorities or separating the accused coach from his position.

The incident was finally reported to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) by the minor’s family. The accused was arrested at the end of that year.
