Cancun, Q.R. — A 27-year-old woman was found deceased Monday morning off Playa Gaviotas Azul in the Cancun Hotel Zone. The woman, who was a tourist to the area, was found after beachgoer reports of a floating body.
Emergency services arrived in response to the 7:00 a.m. report of the body but, despite search efforts, were unable to immediately locate her. Strong winds played a factor in their search efforts as well as the strong currents that carried her out to sea.
The deceased woman has been identified as Sofie “E” from Denmark. She was a student at the Tecnológico de Monterrey and was on vacation in Cancun from Monterrey with a friend at the time of the accident.
On Monday morning, she was swimming with another person when she was swept away by the strong currents at Playa Gaviotas Azul. That was the last time she was seen until others at the beach reported seeing a floating body.

Emergency services, including police and paramedics, responded to the report of the body in the sea. She was eventually pulled ashore where she was pronounced dead by likely drowning. Winds have been strong in the area for days due to the clashing of weather systems that has also brought rain to the region.
