Cozumel, Q.R. — With the start of the arrival of sargassum on the coast of Cozumel, staff from the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) collected 7 tons of sargassum along 700 linear meters of the beach.
Noemí Tun Celis from the Cozumel City Council, reported that the sargassum was collected along Rafael E. Melgar.
She explained that due to the arrival of sargassum on the beach on the western side of Cozumel, prompt attention was given since it is the main face of the island. Last week, Zofemat crew began a clean to remove the sargassum on the 700 linear meters of beach.
She said that the actions carried out help to keep the beaches clean, which benefits the urban image of the destination and therefore the shops and restaurants that are visited by thousands of tourists every day.
She pointed out that the beaches of Cozumel do not currently present a sargassum problem, however, preventive cleaning is already being done in areas where the landfall has been seen.
