Cancun, Q.R. — A Colombian couple arrested at Cancun International last week have been formally charged. The charges come after federal authorities found nearly four kilos of cocaine hidden in a double-bottom of their luggage.
The discovery was made by the anti-drug unit when the luggage was inspected after being deemed an unusual weight. Inside, the airport’s federal agents located 19 packages in one, and 16 packages in the other, hidden in the bottom of two pieces of luggage.
After considering their luggage an unusual weight, “an inspection was carried out on the luggage of the accused today, and in a double bottom of the suitcases were found 19 and 16 packages of cocaine with a total weight of three kilos 942 grams three milligrams,” detailed the Attorney General in a statement.
Authorities have identified the arrested as Juan Alberto C and Yulitza B, both of Colombian origin. They were arrested in Terminal 2 after arriving on a flight from Bogotá.
Both are being held in preventive custody at the Cancun Social Readaptation Center.
