Cancun, Q.R. — The director of the Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (Fonatur) says April 30 is the date earmarked to begin the first phase of the Maya Train.
Rogelio Jiménez Pons, head of the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur) revealed the news during a morning press conference with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador Friday, announcing that on February 7, the first tender will begin and on April 17, the ruling will be announced with the first stage starting April 30.
He explained that the process began with the delivery of basic engineering studies in December and that on January 10, the prebases for phase 1, from Palenque to Cancún, were added, which totals 951 kilometers divided into five sections.
Quintana Roo was included in the first stage of construction of the Maya Train with two 190-kilometer sections. He says for the remaining Cancún-Tulum section, the tender will be launched March 6 to begin construction May 25. That section also includes Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen.
“The second phase that goes from Tulum-Chetumal and Escárcega requires important environmental impact studies, which are being prepared to launch the call and finish the project in the Quintana Roo section,” added Jiménez Pons.
