Chetumal tortilla shop fire believed in retaliation for thwarted robbery

Chetumal, Q.R. — Firemen were requested at a tortilla shop in Chetumal Sunday to put out a blaze. The fire is being investigated as arson after the owner thwarted an attempted robbery.

On Sunday afternoon, a lone male entered the tortilla making shop in an attempt to rob employees, however, the shop’s owner happened upon the scene and discouraged the attempted robbery.

Later that night, his establishment caught fire. Area residents saw flames and made the emergency report. Firemen were quick to arrive and control flames, which caused a substancial amount of damage to the building.

The owner of the tortilla shop told police he believes the fire was in retaliation by the lone male who tried to rob his staff earlier in the day. The shop owner was able to provide a physical description of the suspect.
