Chetumal revamping abandoned booth for increased neighborhood security

Chetumal, Q.R. — The mayor of Chetumal says an abandoned building will be saved and revamped into a neighborhood police booth. The old building, which was once a security booth, is being rehabilitated for neighborhood use.

Mayor Yensunni Martínez Hernández says work has started on the rehabilitation of the building located in the 5 de Abril neighborhood. She says the project is part of the “Security in your Neighborhood” program.

Together with the director of Public Security and Municipal Traffic, Manuel Santibañez Cortés, the Mayor explained that like other booths that have been rescued, a real-time monitoring system will be installed with video surveillance cameras.

The finished neighborhood security project will also include a deterrent tower and will house municipal police officers and from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), duly trained in social proximity and conflict resolution.

Yensunni Martínez said that they are working closely with the state government, with the support of Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, to rebuild the social fabric and build peace throughout the municipality.
