Chetumal residents evacuated after fuel tanker overturns

Chetumal, Q.R. — An entire city block was evacuated Saturday night after a fuel tanker carrying 31,000 liters overturned. Emergency services of Chetumal were sent to Insurgentes Avenue where they found the tanker laying on its side.

The heavy unit was reported caught up in extremely soft shoulder soil that caused it to sink and overturn onto its side. Area residents were evacuated from their homes and power cut while officials waited for a tow truck to upright the tanker.

Civil Protection reported power was cut in the Chetumal colonies of Maya Real, Lagunitas, Los Monos and Forjadores, as well as Plaza Las Américas, 4 de Marzo, Maxuxac Avenue and the airport.

The tanker was transporting 31,000 liters of gasoline to a nearby gas station when the incident occurred. Power was cut and residents evacuated after Civil Protection confirmed a fuel spill.

Emergency services were at the scene for several hours dealing with the spill and overturned unit. There were no injuries reported.
