Chetumal, Q.R. — A man accused of vandalism was arrested from the Chetumal sea Sunday morning. To his surprise, police dove in after him during his attempted water-escape to avoid capture.
The incident happened near the Bellavista neighborhood around 7:00 a.m. after the man was accused of smashing at least one car window in an attempt to steal it.
According to preliminary information, Municipal Police officers saw the man acting suspiciously while loitering around parked vehicles on Chetumal Boulevard. Upon being discovered, the man made a run for it and dove into the water to avoid police.
However, his escape attempt was thwarted when the officers also jumped in the water. Chetumal Municipal Police swam after him, capturing and securing him.
After his arrest, police confirmed that the Chetumal man has an outstanding arrest warrant for vehicle theft. He has since been placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
