The man was arrested after hitting a dog in the head with a bat then dumping it on the side of a public road. The incident was reported to police by area citizens. A Chetumal veterinarian evaluated the dog after it was found to still be alive, however, it suffered irreversible damage and was put down.

In a statement, police said “the events for which a judge issued an arrest warrant against the accused occurred on February 25 of this year, when this person intentionally and unjustifiably committed acts of cruelty against a white, male, mixed breed dog, approximately two years old, who lived at his home.

“Antonio “N” allegedly hit the dog with a blunt object, causing head trauma and loss of function and then left it on the street with serious injuries and neurological damage. A veterinarian determined that it was best to perform clinical death in order to avoid further suffering.”

The arrest warrant for Antonio “N”, which was duly executed when he was walking along Emiliano Zapata Street corner with Bahía Boulevard of Chetumal, they reported Sunday.
