Chetumal man who died in police custody suffered from epilepsy

Chetumal, Q.R. — A man who died in a Chetumal jail while in police custody suffered from epilepsy. a family member has confirmed. According to the man’s family, he is believed to have had a seizure before his death over the weekend.

The 35 year old Chetumal man was arrested Saturday morning for an administrative offence. His sister, who has asked not to be named, said she went to the jail around 10:40 a.m. to bring her brother food and medication.

During their visit, she said her brother reported feeling dizzy, issues that she claimed, were not addressed by staff responsible for his care. She also said after his arrest, jail staff were provided with his medical history.

On Saturday afternoon, the man was confirmed dead by paramedics inside a jail cell while in police custody. They were called by custodial staff around 4:00 p.m.

Other cell mates called custodial staff for help when the man began having seizures.

Authorities have not released any information on the death, nor have they made any public comment.
