Chetumal inmate gunned down outside prison minutes after release

Chetumal, Q.R. — Gunmen opened fire on a moving vehicle that left the Chetumal prison Thursday night. Inside the car was a just-released inmate. He was killed in the targeted shooting.

People near the scene reported the gunfire through 9-1-1, triggering an immediate response from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) and federal agents.

According to early information, the victim had just been released from Chetumal prison and was picked up by a woman. While still near the prison, the white car was fired upon.

The spray of bullets caused the female driver to swerve into a water pipe which broke upon impact. Inside the car was the dead former inmate. The woman, the driver, was not seriously injured.

Witnesses reported seeing the attackers flee in two vehicles, one of which was a white pickup. A description of the second vehicle was not made due to the darkness. Police are reviewing prison security cameras to gather more information.
