Chetumal, Q. R. — A driver who is alleged to have fallen asleep at the wheel awoke to an overturned vehicle. The Chetumal city accident happened Wednesday afternoon when the driver was about to head into a corner.
In a moment of dozing, the vehicle veered off the road and landed on top of a mangrove on Bahía Boulevard. The car ended up on its side after a tire hit the sidewalk. The car was found leaning against trees on top of mangrove rocks heading downward into a small embankment.
Witnesses called emergency 9-1-1 who sent police and the Chetumal fire department to the scene. No one from inside the car required a hospital transfer.
Elements from the Secretariat of Citizen Security Traffic division rerouted curious onlookers around the messy accident scene for nearly an hour until the car was eventually pulled out of the mangrove by a tow truck.
