Charges laid after police trail direct extortion deposits

Cancun, Q.R. — One man and two women are facing charges of extortion against a business in Cancun. The extortion, police say, dates back to July of 2023 when Zacarías “N”, Brenda Estefanía “N” and María Guadalupe “N” demanded 5,000 a week.

“The events for which they are being investigated began to occur in July 2023, when several subjects went to an establishment where they threatened the owner to pay “floor rights” in the amount of 5,000 pesos per week.

“According to the first investigations, from then on, Zacarías “N” personally went to collect the amount demanded, which occurred until November 27, 2023, the date on which he told the owner of the premises that from now on he should deposit the money into bank accounts in the name of Brenda Estefanía “N” and María Guadalupe “N”.

“After obtaining an arrest warrant against these three people, elements of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection arrested them in the city of Mérida, Yucatán,” authorities reported in a statement.

Police have also reported that Zacarías “N”, alias “Skiny”, is being investigated for his involvement in several homicides that occurred in the Cancun Hotel Zone.
