Cancun, Q.R. — A man accused of throwing acid in the face of a woman in traffic has been arrested. Police say the man had been harassing the woman for some time before the Thursday afternoon incident.
According to Cancun authorities, the man identified as Jorge Alberto “N” followed the woman, who has not been named, Thursday while she was driving. When at a city intersection, he intercepted her vehicle and threw acid in her face before fleeing.
City police located the assailant at the intersection of Kabah and Niños Héroes Avenues from where he was arrested. He is facing charges of attempted femicide and remains in custody.

In a statement authorities said “the FGE Quintana Roo reports the arrest of Jorge Alberto “N” for his probable involvement in acts that may constitute the crime of attempted femicide against a victim whose identity is being withheld.
“Initial investigations indicate that the suspect had been harassing the woman for some time, leading him to follow her today and intercept her on Tulum Avenue in Cancun. After insulting her, he threw acid in her face and fled the scene.
“FGE investigative officers captured the assailant at the intersection of Kabah and Niños Héroes Avenues and handed him over to the appropriate authorities to determine his legal status.”
Police have not reported on the health condition of the woman, however, Governor Mara Lezama, in a public address late Thursday, said the woman is stable in hospital.
