Cancun named top vacation destination choice for Americans in 2021

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun has been named the top vacation destination for Americans in 2021. According to Expedia, vacation-deprived Americans have made Cancun their number one choice beach destination for the upcoming year.

The travel agency reported the results of the findings via their annual Travel Trends Report for 2021. They say that while local escapes and roadtrips are likely to remain popular with Americans, search data has shown international escapes are also on the list in a big way.

The number one overall travel choice for Americans is Cancun, followed closely by Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Expedia says that while the top 20 searched-for destinations include islands, the other half are popular beach resorts. In search order, Expedia presents its Travel Trends Report for 2021, with Cancun leading the way.

Other beach destinations being sought by American travelers for 2021 include #2 position Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen and Tulum), Punta Cana (#5), Oahu (#6), Maui (#7), Los Cabos (#9), French Polynesia (#10), Maldives (#11), Montego Bay (#12), Aruba (#13), Puerto Vallarta (#14), Key West (#16), Nassau (#18) and Bali (#20).

They also note that local escapes remain on the menu for many American travelers with top choices being Las Vegas (#3), Orlando (#4), Miami (#8), New York (#15), Los Angeles (#17) and New Orleans (#19).

While activity choices and flexibility in refundable bookings are high-ranking factors in a destination choice, Expedia points out that other decision factors include health and safety advancements with travelers wanting health and cleanliness assurance due to the pandemic.
