Cancun Hotel Association calling for halt to hotel zone development

Cancun, Q.R. — Members of the Cancun Hotel Association are calling for a development halt due to overloaded infrastructure.

Jesús Almaguer Salazar, President of the Association of Hotels of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, launched a call to authorities and developers to put a moratorium on the growth of the Hotel Zone of Cancun.

“We cannot continue developing without having the appropriate infrastructure,” said Almaguer, highlighting the concern of hoteliers about the lack of public services such as water, electricity and drainage.

“Public services have not been updated for decades,” he said Friday ahead of the tourism and sustainability meeting being held in Cancun.

Almaguer says growth of Cancun Hotel Zone must be accompanied by improvements in the basic infrastructure. The President of the Association stressed that the water and electricity networks, installed many years ago, need urgent renovation.

He says together with the Hotel Zone Trust, they will request a consensual moratorium from authorities.

“It is for the good of all,” he said, highlighting the need for future decisions on the development of the Hotel Zone to be regulated, not only in terms of traffic, but also in terms of urban image, infrastructure, services and security.

The hotel leader hopes that the state government, which presides over the trust, will soon call the parties involved to reach an agreement.

“It is time to take care of the growth of Cancun without compromising services and quality of life,” he remarked.

This proposal adds to the growing consensus of hotels in the region who are concerned about the pace of development without adequate infrastructure to support it.

Earlier this month, the Ritz Carlton announced a $400 million USD real estate project for Cancun. The project includes a building mix of hotel and residential suites. The new development, which is well under way, is being constructed at Punta Nizuc in the Cancun Hotel Zone.
