Businessmen propose airport name change to Chetumal-Bacalar International

Chetumal, Q.R. — A name change for the Chetumal International Airport is being proposed by area businessmen. With an increase in online searches for Bacalar, local businessmen are proposing a Chetumal-Bacalar International Airport name instead.

Julián Ricalde Magaña, Deputy President of the Tourism Commission of the XVII Legislature of the State Congress, said the name change was proposed in hopes of attracting more tourism to the southern area.

The Chetumal-Bacalar Airport name idea is based on the potential market that it could generate and help the southern region stand out, said Ricalde Magaña.

The group of Chetumal businessmen say according to their Internet research, the Bacalar name is well positioned in the tourism sector and therefore, including it in the name of the Chetumal Airport could help with regional visitor growth.

Ricalde Magaña said that the growth in passenger arrivals that is projected with the change of name must be demonstrated with numbers. He said they will pitch the idea to the airport administration company of Chetumal.
