Business evacuated after overhead transformer explodes and falls to the ground

Chetumal, Q.R. — A transformer explosion on Insurgentes Avenue caused power outages, evacuations and a security operation Wednesday. The afternoon explosion had the area cordoned off while technicians worked to repair the transformer and restore service.

Emergency services were sent to the avenue after an electrical explosion and its subsequent collapse onto the center of the street. The incident caused power outages and forced authorities to evacuate some businesses.

According to initial reports, the explosion was audible for several blocks. Public Safety officers and Civil Protection personnel arrived and established a security perimeter while assessing damage.

Authorities decided to evacuate nearby businesses due to the possibility of another collapse of other electrical infrastructure components.

CFE (Federal Electricity Commission) personnel arrived to disconnect the damaged transformer and begin repairs. The area remained cordoned off while personnel work to make the repairs. There were no injuries reported.
