Bodies of Cozumel captain and sailor found after Sunday night capsize

Cozumel, Q. R. — The bodies of two Cozumel men have been found after a daylong search began Monday. The bodies of the boat’s captain and one sailor were reported missing after the rescue of 11 Sunday night.

Captain Ricardo “O”, 64, and sailor Juan Carlos “A” 63, both lost their lives Sunday after their boat capsized. The accident happened Sunday evening with the arrival of a cold front.

Everyone from on board Tauro was forced into the sea. The boat, which was carrying 11 tourists at the time, sank near Punta Molas Sunday night. After interviewing those rescued from the boat, authorities learned two others were missing.

A search for the two Cozumel men began first thing Monday. Their bodies were found during a two-boat search in the Punta Molas area.

According to testimonies gathered Sunday night by police, the two men reportedly tried to maneuver the boat toward shore, however, it had already taken on a lot of water which is when the others jumped into the sea and were eventually rescued.

The two men stayed behind in an attempt to save the vessel.
