Cozumel, Q. R. — Nearly a dozen people were plucked from the sea late Sunday after their Cozumel boat capsized. The group of 11 were out in the choppy waters when cold front 16 hit the region with 40 to 50 km/h winds.
It did not take long for their vessel to overturn, dumping all on board into the water. Cozumel Civil Protection Director Rafael Tenorio said all 11 were rescued alive. The group were pulled from the sea by both Civil Protection personnel and marines.
They were escorted to shore to a waiting ambulance where they were evaluated by paramedics before being interviewed and released.
According to preliminary data, the boat departed from El Cielo around 6:00 p.m., shortly before the Port Authority closed navigation to smaller vessels. The boat capsized approximately half of a kilometer off the coast of Cozumel.
Civil Protection Director Rafael Tenorio said a vessel from the Port Captaincy implemented an operation to search for the capsized boat, which was carrying 11, mostly tourists.
