Cancun, Q.R. — State authorities have identified the criminal group responsible for a beach shooting Sunday that left a 12 year old dead. State prosecutor and head of the FGE, Raciel López Salazar, said “great progress” has been made regarding their investigation.
“The investigations are making great progress. We have already identified who the attacking group is. It was a regrettable event. The family arrived, like many others here in Cancun, who went to enjoy the beaches with their family and were about to leave, but, unfortunately, the minor was hit when these criminals arrived who will soon be brought to justice,” López Salazar reported Wednesday.
“We are moving forward with this investigation and we will soon have results. It was a regrettable, tragic situation that occurred on Sunday. We will not allow this type of situation,” he said.
He reported that they are working with Cancun Hotel Zone hotels to better position existing cameras as well as install additional security.
“We held a strategic meeting immediately after the Sunday shooting to design the corresponding securing of the hotel zone so that such a regrettable event does not happen again,” he said.
Governor Mara Lezama said hotels have already been asked to direct their surveillance cameras toward the beaches of Cancun in order to reinforce surveillance. She also said they are working on ways to install cameras on beaches.
“We are constantly working with hotels to find a way for them to install cameras on the beaches. We are working on that request,” she said.
State and municipal governments will also install video surveillance cameras to complement and reinforce those security systems that businesses have already installed, she added.
Lezama said that technology has helped authorities carry out arrests and operations and that they will continue to work to strengthen this area since “money allocated for security will never be considered an expense.”
