Authorities retrieve body of dead manatee from Chetumal Bay

Chetumal, Q.R. — The body of a deceased manatee was brought ashore from Chetumal Bay Thursday morning. The Aquatic Mammal Stranding Network of the Institute of Biodiversity and Protected Natural Areas of Quintana Roo were in charge of retrieving the body from the water after it was reported floating in the Bay.

The manatee carcass was found in a state of decomposition off Bahia Boulevard. It was reported floating in a mangrove area on the banks of Bahia Boulevard in Chetumal.

Passersby were lead to the body due to a foul smell. Environmental authorities were notified. Specialists from the Environmental Protection Agency (PPA) will determine the cause of death.
