Authorities raid five Chetumal buildings arresting 3 and rescuing 26

Chetumal, Q.R. — Three men were arrested during a weekend search operation in Chetumal. After ongoing investigations, the State Attorney General (FGE) carried out searches of five city buildings.

A total of 26 women, victims of forced prostitution, were rescued during the weekend operation.

When they were finished, 26 women of varying nationalities had been rescued, three men had been arrested and five buildings secured. Authorities carried out the searches separately. One was on Marciano González Street, one on Bugambilias Avenue, two on Calzada Veracruz and one on Carranza Avenue in the Las Casitas neighborhood.

The buildings searched included nightclubs, a karaoke bar and a convenience store. The five establishments were searched with judicial warrants for engaging in drug dealing and/or supplying, as well as suspected victims of human trafficking in the form of prostitution.

According to the FGE, the warrants resulted in the rescue of 26 women and the seizure of numerous doses of narcotics, in addition to the arrest of three men. All five buildings have been seized by the state along with at least one security camera.

In their statement, they added that “the State Attorney General’s Office reports that as part of its commitment to zero tolerance for impunity, it has initiated an internal investigation so that if one or more of the officers involved in the searches engaged in improper conduct, they will be punished as required by law.”
