Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — In a press release, authorities announced the arrest of a man believed responsible for the murder of a Mamitas Beach Club manager. On Thursday afternoon, State Prosecutor Óscar Montes de Oca, reported the arrest which took place on March 1.
In the release, state officials said that Wilber U was arrested March 1 on possession of drug charges during a police operation in Playa del Carmen. Montes de Oca says that after his arrest, they learned of various extortion reports made through Emergency 911 of which Wilber U fits at least one description.
Montes de Oca went on to explain that “in addition, said person had characteristics similar to one of the participants in the murder of the manager of a beach club,” who was killed on January 25. Those responsible for the murder were recorded on the restaurant’s video surveillance cameras.
“Due to these facts, the aforementioned subject was immediately transferred to the offices of the Prosecutor of the Public Ministry in the municipality of Solidaridad,” he added.
The State Prosecutor reported that “when various acts of investigation were carried out, it was learned that Wilbert “U” had physical and nickname coincidences with those described in a current court order for the crime of homicide.”
“As a result of this and the analysis of the evidence (…) one of the people who appear in the videos that were taken from the video recording equipment of the beach club, it was concluded that it is the same person who participated in the homicide, which was corroborated with other investigative techniques,” the agency reported adding that “on the date of Wilber U’s arrest he was wearing clothing identical to the one he was wearing on the day of the murder.”
Montes de Oca explained that on the day of the Mamitas Beach Club murder, Wilber U went to the establishment “along with three other subjects and asked an employee to call the victim, and once he was present in the reception area, other participants took him to the bathroom where he was deprived of life,” and from where the shooter fled.
