At least three killed in head-on bus crash outside Chiquilá

Chiquilá, Q.R. — A passenger bus that crashed head-on into oncoming traffic has left several dead. The Tuesday evening accident happened on a section of highway that leads from the town of Chiquilá (the ferry to Holbox) to the town of Kantunilkin.

According to information obtained, the Autobuses de Oriente (ADO) bus driver collided head-on with a taxi which involved at least one other vehicle. The taxi ended up crushed and overturned off the highway.

Another vehicle involved, said to be a private vehicle, rolled into a ditch and caught fire. The front of the ADO bus was completely destroyed. There are reports of passengers being trapped inside the bus. So far, at least three people have been reported killed in the multi-vehicle accident.

Passing motorists reported the scene to state emergency services around 6:00 p.m. One of the deceased is said to be the driver of the taxi. The National Guard, Red Cross and State Police were part of the response team. A public statement regarding the accident has not been made.
