ASUR starts terminal expansion projects at Cancun International

Cancun, Q.R. — Construction for a new terminal 1 at the Cancun International Airport has been started. The new construction project is part of the medium and long-term investment projects of Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR).

Terminal 1 is being completely revamped and expanded. The air terminal is being brought back to life after being closed more than a year.

Director the Cancun Airport Carlos Trueba Coll says the new terminal 1 should be operational by late 2026.

“If you go to the airport, you will see the construction very noticeably. We are building the new Terminal 1 which is a remodeling and expansion of the entire Terminal which was closed and out of service for a long time.

“The work has already been started and is going quite well. It is on time and should be finished by the second half of 2026,” he explained.

The objective is to begin operating by 2026, thereby increasing the capacity of the facility, with all terminals being available for use.

Tureba Coll says they are nearing the completion of a phase 2 of terminal 4, which is expected to be operational by the end of this year. Last year, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) granted the change of land use of approximately 63 hectares for the airport’s expansion. The expansion of Terminal 4 will be constructed on land located west of Huayacán Avenue.

Terminal 4 of the Cancun International Airport is being expanded to meet demand. He says they estimate moderate growth of 6 to 8 percent in air passengers with the expectation of continued growth in coming years.
