Chetumal, Q.R. — A citizen report has lead authorities to the discovery of the body of a female manatee. Elements of the Othón P. Blanco fire department collected the body of the mammal from the bay of Chetumal in an area close to the Museo del Mestizaje.
The body was transferred to the facilities of the University of Quintana Roo for a necropsy. The Marine Mammal Stranding Service for the coasts of the state of Quintana Roo report the female was approximately 2.7 meters in length and in an advanced state of decomposition when found.
This is the second dead manatee reported to the Stranding Network this year, both in the same area.
