Chetumal, Q.R. — UPDATED: A man of around 50 was killed Sunday after being hit by a car. The woman driving the car fled the scene but was captured several blocks away. Witnesses to the afternoon accident followed her and were able to surround her vehicle to stop her from escaping for a second time.
Police were called and the woman arrested. She was located at the intersection of Guayacán and Cacao Streets in the Arboledas neighborhood from where she was taken into police custody.
According to those who saw what happened, the man was driving his yellow work tricycle on Calzada Centenario around 4:00 p.m. when he was struck. The woman hit the man on the bicycle with the front passenger side of her car, crumpling two tires of the cargo trike while throwing the bicyclist to the pavement before driving away.
Paramedics were called, however, they pronounced the man dead at the scene. Police cordoned off the bicycle hit and run area for the corresponding investigations.
The female driver, who witnesses accused of speeding, was arrested blocks from the site of the accident and transferred to the State Attorney General’s Office.
UPDATE: On Monday, police reported on the arrest of María José “N”, “presumed involved in a traffic accident that left a man dead.”
The Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) said they were made aware of the traffic accident while doing rounds.
“Upon arriving at the scene, an eyewitness of the incident reported that he was riding his motorcycle in the south to north lane of Calzada del Centenario when, at the height of the Andara residential area, a Chevrolet Aveo type vehicle, blue in color with Quintana Roo license plates, hit a tricycle that was traveling in the same lane and continued its journey.
“He proceeded to follow the car on Calzada del Centenario crossing with Avenida Flamboyanes, and upon reaching the height of Guayacán Street with Cacao Street, he intercepted the car.
“Medical units were called to provide care to the man on the tricycle who died on the spot. Elements of the State Attorney General’s Office arrived for the corresponding procedure. The vehicle and the woman were seized. She was placed at the disposal of the corresponding authorities.”
