AMLO says “Maya Train is a go” and knows nothing of a judicial suspension

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — “The Maya Train is a go”, said President of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Tuesday morning after learning about a judicial suspension of Section 5 south through media reports.

During the morning press conference, AMLO made a point of stating that “there is still no official notification” to him regarding the temporary suspension that was grated by a Merida court on Monday.

“El Tren Maya Va”, he said adding that he was not aware of any judicial suspension of the Playa del Carmen section of train. However, he did share his thoughts on the topic, saying that there is a campaign against the Maya Train project which is financed by international organizations and Mexican businessmen who use “pseudo-environmentalists.”

“They are using pseudo-environmentalists. These are people without convictions or moral scruples of any kind. How do you now worry about the environment? Why didn’t environmentalists speak out against Xcaret who diverted underground rivers? In Valladolid they dug to unite cenotes and the environmentalists did not notice. Wasn’t there a judge in Merida? He didn’t know? ” he said.

AMLO went on to say that the federal government will defend itself legally since the Maya Train affects no cenote no underground river, adding that as of Tuesday, his government had not received an official notification about the provisional suspension of Section 5 south granted by a district judge on Monday afternoon.

“There is no official notification yet . We don’t know what it is. Only what is already in the public domain which is for political purposes, not environmentalists, a campaign against the Maya Train financed by international organizations and by Mexican businessmen,” he continued.

On Tuesday, heavy machines were out in full force continuing their work along the Villas del Sol area of Playa del Carmen despite the judicial ruling.
