American man dies in hospital after drowning off Puerto Aventuras

Puerto Aventuras, Q.R. — An American man who was rushed to a Playa del Carmen hospital died shortly after being admitted. The 52-year-old tourist was rushed to the private hospital by ambulance after being pulled from the sea outside a Riviera Maya hotel.

The incident happened Wednesday evening when the man was seen on the Puerto Aventuras hotel beach. It was around 5:30 p.m. when he was pulled from the water and helped while an ambulance was called.

Medical personnel transferred the man to a private hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced shortly after arriving. The deceased has been identified only as 52-year-old Nicolay “T” of American origin.

A majority of the Quintana Roo coast continued to experience rough seas and high waves into Thursday after the passing of Category 4 Hurricane Ian Tuesday and Wednesday. Port Captains closed water navigation to smaller vessels due to the ongoing rough sea.
