American dies in Cozumel ATV cruise ship excursion accident

Cozumel, Q.R. — An American man died during an ATV accident on the island of Cozumel Tuesday after overturning. The man was part of a group of ATV riders that was being lead by a tour leader through a wooded area of the island.

The organized ride was an excursion for cruise ship passengers that had docked the island early Tuesday. During the morning ride, the man is alleged to have gone off trail and overturned his unit.

Authorities were made aware of the accident around 10:40 a.m. at the southern end of the island near the Nachi Cocom beach. Witnesses told police that after the roll, the man got up on his own but fainted almost immediately.

An ambulance was called. Medical personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene. Elements of the Investigative Police of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) were called in due to the death.

According to police information, the ATV tour guide acknowledged that as they entered an open green area, the man diverted from the group and rode on a section that caused his unit to overturn.

The ATV roll caused him to be thrown from the bike. He suffered injuries to his head and face. The tourist has been identified as American cruise ship passenger Terry “B” of between 55 and 60 years of age. The group was approximately one kilometer into their ride when the accident happened.
