Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Three additional Tren Maya travel days have been added to the current online e-Ticket system. Óscar David Lozano Águila, the General Director of Tren Maya announced Monday that tickets are currently available for additional travel dates.
The additional three dates were added due to high demand. He reported that interested Tren Maya travelers can now purchase e-Tickets for December 17, 18 and 19 travel. These dates are still for the San Francisco, Campeche to Cancun, Quintana Roo route.
He said that the Government of Mexico is working on the creation of its own ticketing platform as well as the establishment of points of sale in stations such as Campeche, Mérida, Valladolid and Cancun.
This plan to expand ticket sales also includes the airports of Cancun and Mérida, where there will be sales booths for the local population, he said.
During the Monday morning press conference with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he mentioned that soon, shorter Maya Train trips will be made available, however, for now, only round trips between Campeche and Cancun in tourist or premier class are for sale.
General Lozano Águila explained that ticket sales are being released by tested convoys. As more trains are tested, more tickets will become available for public sale. He says each train can carry 231 passengers.
On Monday, Lozano Águila reported that the sixth Maya Train convoy left the factory in Ciudad Sahagún, Hidalgo, bound for Cancun, Quintana Roo, on December 4. Five convoys are currently in the Cancun garage and are being tested as they arrive.
“We are having a soft opening or pre-opening sale from December 16 to February 29,” he explained. On the first day of ticket sales, 881 tickets were purchased in just 20 minutes.
The schedules will be specific in the first routes and 14 stations will be active in the first stage. As of December 31, there will be 22 active stations.
There will be no resale of tickets because each person can only access five tickets and care is being taken to avoid improper practices.
A second stage will be opened at the end of December after consolidation of the Boca del Cerro bridge. The bridge has posed engineering challenges which caused delays.
During the Monday press conference, President López Obrador reiterated that on December 31, the second stage of the Maya Train from Cancun, Quintana Roo to Palenque, Chiapas will be inaugurated once the Boca del Cerro bridge is complete.
He says it is the most important structural project of section 1, which crosses the Usumacinta River through a clearing of more than 210 meters, which involves around 2,046 tons of steel and 9,313 tons of concrete.
“We can now reach Escárcega without a problem. We were missing the section from Escárcega to Palenque, which we could not reach via the Boca del Cerro bridge, but it has already been achieved and we hope that they will begin to lay the concrete and the tracks because now all the sections have tracks.
“We are doing well and the bridge is good news, that is, we will be able to inaugurate the section,” he said.
