Cancun, Q.R. — A massive water leak left at least one vehicle stuck in a large sinkhole. Residents on Niños Héroes Avenue reported hearing an “explosion” Tuesday afternoon before water started gushing from below the street.

Within minutes, several city blocks started to flood. The water break happened near the Haciendas Real del Caribe subdivision in Cancun around 2:00 p.m. A large sinkhole has since been discovered in the midst of the flooded streets.
One SUV passing through became trapped in the hole. Other motorists stopped to help them out.
Elements from the Cancun Traffic Department arrived to deal with traffic. The City has issued an official statement on the water break.
“Cancun residents, due to Aguakan’s scheduled work to repair a sinkhole caused by a leak in SM 201, on Av. Niños Héroes and Calle Ixtepec, water pressure will be reduced, which will temporarily affect service in several neighborhoods including Urbi and Kusamil.

“The team from the General Directorate of Public Services is monitoring the situation to ensure that service is regularized as soon as possible. Low pressure is expected tomorrow and normalization by Thursday. We ask you to take the necessary precautions,” Ayuntamiento de Benito Juárez reported.
