The small flames were fanned by strong wind gusts that helped fuel its growth to other neighboring lots. Cancun firefighters were eventually called by nearby residents who watched as the fire grew in size.

By the time firemen arrived on scene, the brush fire had spread to an area where overhead CFE lines were also burned. The entire residental area was left without electricity.

Personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) arrived to assess damage to the melted lines and burned power poles. There was no word on how long repairs could take.

According to information provided by neighbors, the fire started on abandoned land, but seeing that it was small, they decided not to report it. As the hours passed, the fire grew in size and consumed the surrounding brush including the electricity poles.

Cancun firemen were on scene more than two hours before reporting the fire officially extinguished with no risk of a flareup. Authorities at the scene did not speculate on a possible cause for the fire.
