Cancun, Q.R. — A Ukrainian man spent the weekend in a Cancun jail after being arrested inside Cancun International. The unnamed man was detained by airport authorities after Customs located more than $20,000 USD and €16,000 Euros in cash.
His arrest was made by National Guard in coordination with personnel from the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM). According to an official statement, National Guard “detained a person of foreign origin who was trying to enter the country with wads of dollar and euro bills, equivalent to more than 600,000 pesos.”
“National Guard were carrying out prevention and surveillance inspections in Terminal 2 of the Cancun International Airport when they received the report that in the customs area there was a passenger of Ukrainian origin with bills of different denominations without Tax Administration Service (SAT) declaration,” the statement read.
During the search, National Guard located and counted $20,354 U.S. dollars and €16,565 Euros, resulting in a figure greater than 600,000 Mexican pesos. The man lacked the documentation required to support the legal origin, possession and transfer of the cash.
