Two killed in Cancun Hotel Zone car accident

Cancun, Q.R. — Two people are reported dead after the vehicle in which they were traveling hit a palm tree and overturned in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

The accident happened around 11:30 Friday night when police were called to tend to an accident at Kilometer 1.5 of the Hotel Zone. When they arrived, they found a smashed car with two people trapped inside what was left of the wreckage.

According to the police report, the driver of the car was speeding when he lost control and bounced off the center median, hit a palm tree and street light before overturning the vehicle. Both the tree and light standard were uprooted from the impact.

The accident area of Kukulcán Boulevard was shut down in both directions for more than two hours while police, fire and medical personnel attended to the scene.

Members of the Urban Rescue Group of the Cancun fire department were called in to remove the deceased bodies from the twisted metal. The car and its driver were from the state of Campeche.
