Cancun, Q.R. — Two occupants on a boat that caught fire in the Cancun Nichupté Lagoon Wednesday remain in hospital. The man and woman were rushed to hospital with extensive first and second degree burns due to a sudden fire.
A Colombian woman suffered second-degree burns on her legs, while a Venezuelan man was rushed to hospital with first-degree burns on his arms and legs. A third boat passenger, the Colombian woman’s Italian partner, was unharmed.
Other boaters on the lagoon reported the Wednesday afternoon fire to emergency services. The boat caught fire at kilometer 4.5 of Kukulcán Boulevard in the Hotel Zone of Cancun.
Emergency 9-1-1 sent police and fire responders to the lagoon. The three people on board were assisted, with two being transferred to Cancun hospital. There have been reports that a sudden explosion was responsible for the fire. Authorities continue to investigate.
