Tulum, Q.R. — Traffic was slow going for hours along the federal highway due to another taxi protest. It was the second time this week members of the Tiburones del Caribe taxi union of Tulum protested the arrest of their union leader.
On Wednesday, hundreds of taxi drivers protested the arrest and subsequent charges of the union leader along the highway between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Traffic was slow going for hours due to the protest.
The second protest came after their union leader, Eliazar “N”, was officially charged with the murder and attempted murder of four after his arrest late last week. Tulum taxi drivers are calling the charges a political coup.
On Wednesday, the State Attorney General (FGE) reported on the preliminary hearing that lead to official charges. In their statement, they said Eliazar “N” has been ordered house arrest during the three months of investigation time the judge granted the prosecution.
A judge “orders total house arrest in Playa del Carmen to Eliazar “N” for his probable participation in acts constituting the crimes of qualified homicide and attempted homicide against four people whose identities are reserved.
“Eliazar “N” was arrested on Wednesday, August 29 of this year, in the municipality of Tulum, after the fulfillment of an arrest warrant, where a .380 caliber firearm was seized from him.
“This Social Representation has a period of three months to complete the investigations,” the FGE (Fiscalía General del Estado) of Quintana Roo reported in a public statement.
The Tulum union leader was arrested from inside a vehicle by the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) Thursday. At the time of his arrest, the FGE reported on “the capture of Eliazar “N”, who is related to acts that probably constitute the crimes of qualified homicide and attempted homicide against four people whose identity is reserved.”
Eliazar “N” is charged in relation to the murder of three and attempted murder of a fourth person that took place in September of 2023. An eye witness who claims Eliazar “N” ordered the hits was the key to the charges being laid Wednesday.
